- Tell us about yourself: Artist, Mother, Equestrienne, Educator, Homesteader wannabe, dog-lover. Not counting my current DS, I have had 2 GSDs and 3 rescued mixed-breeds. All of these dogs were rescues, except for my childhood GSD, who was a gift from my parents when I was 7, and my current DS who I bartered artwork for from the breeder. Maiyou, one of my current dogs, is a Pitbull/New Guinea Singing Dog of 13 years old. Still very active and "Young" in nature. I now also have a DS named Mokume, (pronounced "Moh-koo-meh") or "Moko" for short. Newest member of our pack is Freyja, a random mixed hound I rescued during a horseback trip in the middle of a state forest.

I WILL be a new Dutch Shepherd owner on July 20th!!! Puppies are on the ground and a huge litter at 14! Very excited. I chose the Dutch because I like high drive dogs and my husband likes shepherds. We both have had GSDs in our past. I also am interested in search and rescue training. I live in the mountains of California and have two older Australian Shepherds. I do know that I have a job managing this pack. My husband is on board with it all. No kids. Both of us have flexible jobs. We are active folk but aging! ;-))
Still we mountain bike, hike, cross-country ski and my husband runs. I walk in the woods with the dogs 3 times a day and we are lucky to have US Forest right out the door. So that is it.

Rescued the smartest dog i had ever seen off nyc street in 2000. Tracedog's intelligence exceeded by multiples my judgement that day. My first [and only as of 10/2012] dog turned out to be a DS, perhaps with a touch of something else, but attention to detail, behavioral traits, and physical habits, movement, and skill identical to DS. But MUCH more intellectual ability. supremely confident in all settings, fearless, very outgoing and social with people and friendly with dogs. Seldom apart in over 12 years, Trace Dog was the most important relationship of my adult life; he was my partner. today in a very dark dusk, i did one of those weird things only i would do in a snow storm with frigid temp and blasting winds; i drove all 3 pups to an ocean beach that has farmland on the other side of the dunes. opening the door for them, the 3 together made a seemingly automatic dash over the dunes toward the ocean - ignoring the farm-field in front of them - the sound of the waves and the storm winds almost deafening.
it was like they were in formation. they ran or would trot fast in unison a few inches from each other. they would turn, slow, stop, sniff, and plunge ahead as if harnessed together. they often run together on our beach or in the yard, but they are attacking or chasing each other, trying to steal prizes from each other. tonight they moved together like a brindled river through the falling snow - their mission unknown to me. they were utterly silent in the roar about them.
then over the dunes and racing down an empty line in the field until they were just dark specks among the white specks. called back by whistle, the brindle troika raced at top speed almost half a mile to my feet. as if they were tethered front and back to one another, their search mission continued until i could no longer stand the cold wind.
all the while - if close enough one could see - their muscles flexed and glistened in the snow.
they are a very SEXY lot this DS breed.

- Tell us about yourself: Hi, my name is Lindsey and I have a five year old boxer named Roo and a five month old DS named Eris. My girls are wonderful and Eris is beginning to learn her manners. Luckily I have an older, low energy dog to calm her down some! Love them, they are like my and my husband's kids!!

- Tell us about yourself: Hey all im a dutch addict :) lol we now have three in my family my dad has two that work up at a farm with him been stealing them for months and working with a protection sports group in my area LOVE LOVE LOVE this breed yes even in the temper tantrum melt down demonic running around like a cracked out two year old moments lol just got my own seven week puppy can't wait to see him grow.

We are a family of rescues, (yeah, me included), in Southern California. My wife and I currently have two dogs, a Golden Retriever/ GSD mix by the name of Morgan, and our DS mix(?), Dinga Roo. We had never even heard of a Dutch Shepherd before until we were stalked by this nice lady in the pet store who asked us if Roo was a DS. Dang if that lady wasn't on to something. I just found this site, so here we are....

LOL, only enough to grab a mouthful of kibble and hide it under the blanket. I swear that dog can pack food in her mouth like a hamster and has it stashed everywhere. She kiped a snack pack of Keebler crackers, had it stuffed all the way in her mouth and tried to walk by like nothing was wrong. That should be added to the "anecdotes" thread! And John... I love, love, love that snippet of writing there, so descriptive and evocative.
I agree with the "Sexy" description, too, so true. Whenever I watch Mokume running and leaping, the play of muscles under glossy coat, the effortless gazelle-like ability to launch himself into the air and made it look like gliding or flying, or even levitating, as opposed to jumping, his intent gaze when he's focused and the simple raw power he's capable of, all while seeming to make no effort at all. *shakes head in awe* I never tire of watching him or cease to be astounded by the physical grace.

yes [ and thank you ], physical grace is a very good description. i should post photos of 2 running side-by-side and simultaneously doing gazelle leaps. talking precision timing that is down to hundredths of a second. how do they know to both leap at the same time in full racing gallop!?
