He came across a 9 month old Dutch Shepherd female pup who needed a home. She doesn't have the nerves to do the search and rescue she was intended for, but is perfect pet material. She's enough of a challenge to be alot of fun :)
Just curious as to what ya'll think Rufus may be mixed with. His personality is completely Dutch, but he's just so big! We were thinking either mastiff or pitt due to the blocky head. He's 6 months old now and at least 75lbs. His ears try to stand, but don't stay up terribly long, so unsure if they will fully go up or not.
This is purely for fun, as we don't really care what he is mixed with! He's a great pup and so much fun to have around. Let me know if you want other angles of pics and I'll do my best to get it of him.

Tell us about yourself: I am a mom of 6 life forces - 2 kids and 3 dogs 1 hamster. I live in Ct. I have trained Ringsport and Agility and have 2 DS, one 15 and 7 and a Basset Hound Cookie who is 2
there are so many breeds its really hard to say what he could be. He is a mixed breed, he is adorable and you love each other.
What does he do that makes you think DS? There are so many behaviors that cross many breeds. Sadie and Misty (Basset) do so many of the same things and they are at opposite ends of the dog world.

Mostly going by what the shelter told us in that he is a Dutch mix. He acts almost exactly like Maiya and my parents Malinois, that I'd just assumed he's Dutch or some sort of shepherd mix. His eyes follow wherever you go (and that piercing gaze-don't see that in most breeds), usually resulting in him right there behind you. He herds us and the other animals. He's extremely mouthy, much like my parents maligators. Playtime is all teeth; there is nothing like the snapping sounds he makes haha. There are other things as well, I just can't think of any right off the top of my head.
He very well may not even have Dutch in him, he just acts very much like a Dutch or a Mal. We just continue to call him a Dutch mix since he looks like one. Again, this post is entirely out of curiosity of what you guys see in him-not to prove one way or another.

Tell us about yourself: Well...it's a transition really. Had my final GSD from 1996 to 2009-she's over the Rainbow Bridge now); then moved over to Belgian Mals. Now I've DS fever looking to get SH silver brindle sib(in my dreams) for my 5 yo Male Mal Razor!
Thanks for having me onboard-I am here to learn all I can about Dutch SHepherds...although after 3.5 yrs of Mals I still wonder if I am really ever going to figure it out!

Oh wow, looking at that breed, he definitely resembles them! We were wondering about some sort of mastiff cross. We're expecting him to get huge...Thankfully he's very well behaved.

He also may be a Cane Corso mix. Greatly resembles them too. By chance, does anyone know if those show up on DNA tests? His personality is nothing like what I'm reading on the mastiffs however. But he certainly looks like one!

Tell us about yourself: Hi there. I WILL be a new Dutch Shepherd owner on July 20th!!! Puppies are on the ground and a huge litter at 14! Very excited. I chose the Dutch because I like high drive dogs and my husband likes shepherds. We both have had GSDs in our past. I also am interested in search and rescue training. I live in the mountains of California and have two older Australian Shepherds. I do know that I have a job managing this pack. My husband is on board with it all. No kids. Both of us have flexible jobs. We are active folk but aging! ;-)) Still we mountain bike, hike, cross-country ski and my husband runs. I walk in the woods with the dogs 3 times a day and we are lucky to have US Forest right out the door. So that is it.
I just wonder about a great dane... I don't see the massive head of a cane corso or mastiff... but that is just me. The other day I met the biggest great dane I have ever ever seen... that is what I see in your guy.

I believe (though I could be wrong) that you will find Great Dane DNA mixed in with the Mastiff breeds (Cane Corso, Mastiffs, Presa Canario, Dogue de Bordeuax, etc). I can't remember which came first, the Dane (actually called the German Mastiff) or the English Mastiff....but I am fairly certain that they are connected from way back when.

Great Dane fits his personality much more, for the mastiff side. Wonder if he's a Great Dane/German Shep/Lab mix or something lol. His coat is definitely shepherd-ish. Tis fun to guess at what he could be.
