Tell us about yourself: Hello! I just got my puppy Dutchess (original, I know) and am so excited to raise her. I'm glad I've found this forum, as I'm sure I'll have plenty of questions along the way.

"Making Biscuits"

Post by Linda Lew »

Just wondering if anyone else's dog has this behavior. When Dutchess is not getting the attention she wants, she'll go lay down and start sucking and kneading on a certain stuffed animal or her pillow like a cat (making biscuits). She's always done this, and I thought she'd outgrow it, but now she's over a year old and still making her biscuits. I think it's cute, but kind of odd. She still rips other stuffy's and toys to shreds, but has her favorites for this calming behavior. Any thoughts?

They are making their beds. My dogs have always done this, they will knead and circle until its just right, then do it some more. Sadie will bite at the bed to get it right. Not sure if she is doing it because she isnt getting attention or figures since you dont want to play, she will go lay down and stars making her bed.

I've never had a dog suckle a bed or toy. Huh.

Dogs circle before laying down...a throwback response when they used to have to circle in tall grasses to mat them down, thereby making a bed on which to rest.
Though I can only hope to become the person who my animals believe I am, the things that they have taught me have made me a better human being. ~~~Sharon~~~

I know what you mean about the circling and bed making - it's not that. It's a comfort thing. I've read that Dobermans do this, just wondering if there were any other DS out there. My boyfriend says we should have got a male, now we have another emotional female in the house. LOL

My male sucks his bear almost every night. He always has... He is very particular about what bear he will suck on and only sucks on the back of the head.
