So excited, just wanted to say that to some people that might understand. I don't have many friends that are dog people, lol.

Re: I get my puppy 1/16/16
I'll be driving from Chicago to WV, I have some free time. I figured it be better to pick up than to ship, but I really don't know. Also I'll be able to evaluate the pups myself, I have first pick of the girls so...

Re: I get my puppy 1/16/16
I just got home from my long journey. That darn pup hardly made a peep the whole way home, 12 hours in the truck. Got home, holy crap, that dog went ballistic. Gave her a wash, not much problem there. Then she was under, over and on top of everything in the house, garage and back yard. I don't think she has an ounce of fear.
I'll put up some pic's tomorrow. Any suggested name would be helpful, Swift and Jazz are all I have so far. One last thing, what are your recommendations about dew claws, leave them or remove them?

- Tell us about yourself: owner of a male Dutch Shepherd and female Alaskan Malamute
- Location: Ireland
Re: I get my puppy 1/16/16
my alaskan malamute had double rear dewclaws (two large claws per hind leg), floppy and unnattached to the bone, which frequently got caught on rugs ect so i had them removed while she was being spayed.
you should never ever remove front dewclaws as far as i and any vet ive met is concerned (its also illegal here, along with any kind of tail/ear docking) as theyre very useful to the dog for holding bones, climbing up steep hills and just generally gripping things like we do with our thumbs. i havent seen a dutch with rear dewclaws so if its the front ones youre talking about id strongly advise you leave them alone:)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r4XflsM ... e=youtu.be heres a good video showing how these labs would likely drown if they didnt have their front dew claws intact to grip the ice of a frozen lake.
best of luck with you new puppy:)

Re: I get my puppy 1/16/16
Hahahahaha. That reminds me of my trip to WV to pick up Xander. He slept the whole way, not a peep. I even pulled over once to check and make sure he wasn't dead. Lol.Jimyfirm wrote:I just got home from my long journey. That darn pup hardly made a peep the whole way home, 12 hours in the truck. Got home, holy crap, that dog went ballistic. Then we arrived home and after about 30 minutes he was everywhere, running, jumping, biting ankles, nonstop all day. I thought to myself, "omg, what have I done, I have bought satan."
But it got better.... slowly but surely.

Re: I get my puppy 1/16/16
Yay!!! I would highly suggest thinking of your commands you'll use and use a name that is two syllables and not similar. One syllable is fine as long as it doesn't sound like their name, ie, "swift sitz" is a little close.
And PICS!!!! OMG PUPPY PICS!!!!! So we can help name her... and go ga-ga of course...

AWWWWW! She's so cute! I love the constant "WTF is on my neck" scratching puppy pics. H was a blur unless food was involved and even then it was a 50/50 shot.

Re: I get my puppy 1/16/16
Dew claws, front: there's a lot of tendons attached to them...leave them on and clip the nail as you would others.
There's at least one thread on here, if you do a search, that discusses this. Christie Meyer made a definitive statement about their removal.

Re: I get my puppy 1/16/16
Very cute pics what was the name of that cartoon character that spun around crazy like ... Tasmanian devil? If I had known exactly what the first puppy year was going to be like, I would have named my pup Taz. it was suggested to think of other dog names. I'm currently have two dogs leia and lexi. Not smart on my part live and learn

That Taz description tickled my funny bone... couldn't resist... whipped up this quick picture using the first alternate of Hilde's "beast" pic:
