Pocket Dutch

Post by PipPipHurray »

Hello there, long time lurker, first time poster. I have had a great time reading through posts on this site and following some of the stories. Of course, I love looking at all of the dogs. My husband and I have acquired what we refer to as our 'pocket dutchy' due to her small stature. Pip is a dutch/mal mix that was an owner surrender and is a whopping 38# at 8 months with a light build. She is, however, all the pow in half the package. I look forward to contributing once in a while, though I will likely still lurk quite a bit, and continuing to read all of the great information on the forum!
Pip is working on being a trail dog while I am out in the woods riding, but in the mean time she is learning, obedience, agility, bitework, and nosework. She isn't crazy high drive but she is certainly up there and has a great will-do attitude. Super athletic, very smar, she has been a very sweet, fun addition to our household.

Makes her head look way too big for her body, lol. But good on the color.

Actually size range for females is 40 to 60 lbs.
She could finish at 42/43 lbs.

Thank you. She's a petite girl for sure, but it doesn't help that her brothers are 70# and 115#, lol.

My female dutch shepherd Asia was very small when we got her- around 45 pounds fully grown. She to was a mal/dutchie mix. I was told she was eighteen months old. However she never got any bigger. Now she's a lot older, got a little pudgy, and has turned all gray. She's the greatest most appreciative dog I've ever owned. Your dog will probably level out a little over 40 pounds, which is perfect.

Tell us about yourself: Grace = Best Girl

When I adopted Grace, she was 9 months old and weighed 38 pounds as well. A little over a year later she's settled right around 46 pounds. Grace also looks remarkably similar to your girl. How tall is Pip at the shoulder? Grace is just over 23 inches floor to shoulder.

Thank you guys. I have not seen one as small as she is in person since I'm mostly around patrol dogs, so that is very interesting to hear that it's not so uncommon.
1) PhillipJFry, love the name, loved the show, lol.
2) Pip is currently 20in at the wither. She does still seem to be growing, just slowed way down. I got used to the big boys and how dramatically their size changed in the fist year. I haven't had one from 12 weeks old in a good decade. She is actually exactly the same size as my friend's unaltered male McNab. They're the same age and have been on the same growth curve since we got them even though he looks thicker than she does.

Tell us about yourself: We have Fiona the Rescue Mutt, adopted in January 2024. We have no idea what Breed she is, but she looks like a miniature Dutch Shepherd.

Need an opinion: we adopted Fiona the Rescue Mutt in January 2024, and had no idea what breed she is. But from this forum I think she might be a tiny Pocket Dutch. She's about a year old, weighs about 25 pounds, and stands maybe 16 inches to the shoulder. Look at the pics and tell me what you think.

Other than the brindle coloring, there is nothing Dutch Shepherd in this dog.

Tail, ears, body shape, head shape... and size, are all wrong.
