Alarm system

Just had a door to door salesman come to my house and try to sell me an alarm system...

1) he horribly mispronounced my neighbors name
2) he told me he had "just come from their house" ... not possible because I talked to them as they were leaving for the weekend
3) he said that my neighbor recommended that he come talk to me ... also not true - we have been neighbors for 18 years and I know that is not going to happen...

Not that I was interested but ... during the conversation he talked himself out of the sale..how?

Mostly he mentioned over and over how he has noticed and was wary of my "black dog" and that a dog "like that" is the best protection anyone could have...

We had a federal agency, to remain unnamed, check out our place once, because of a liscence that we have. They needed to know if it was secure. Let's just say that some of the recommendations they usually make for security, were not in place. But they did not take long to figure out that you don't always need bars in front of windows, or electronic alarms on every door, in order to be secure. If the dogs could hammer a sign up on the door, it would truly say 'make my day'....

One of the reasons we decided to go with a protection-trained dog for Sally was that a friend's house in a neighboring county had been broken into during the day. Now that we've had Sasha at home for several weeks, and we've heard her colossal bark when the UPS man or wandering Girl Scouts step up on our porch, I feel much better about what's going to happen if anyone approaches our house when Sally's home alone. This past Sunday, a lady at our church told us her house had been robbed during the day. She lives just about a mile down the road from us. My husband and I just looked at each other in relief that we have Sasha here with Sally now - she is without a doubt the best protection system we could ask for and worth every single penny we paid for her.

Regardless of what he was selling, Eric, I doubt you'd want to purchase anything from a salesman that numb AND desperate.

Some guy in a beat-up truck lurked by my house a couple months ago. Thor listened to instruction as the guy walked up the drive and proceeded to knock on the door--right on the sign that states: No Solictors. Apparently, I was feeling a little mean that day and opened the front, inside door; as he reached to open the screen door (OMG!), I opened the inside door further while holding Thor's flat collar (Thor hadn't uttered a sound the whole time) and said, "You don't want to open that door." He said he wasn't going to, retracting his hand...said "sorry" and hopped back in his beat-up truck. Wierd.

I hate to say it, but it was only a matter of time before criminals began taking dogs trained to attack other dogs to the death into home invasions. It's happening, folks...unfortunately.

We have a lot of folks who come in groups to solicit for tree trimming since we live in a neighborhood with very large oaks, etc. They always come during the day when most of us are at work but I have posted on all exterior doors and gates "working k9 on premises." Heck it could be a bird dog. <BGRN> Doesnt actually say, protection dog, or bad dog or whatever. All anyone has to do is hear the barks or banging on the inside of the doors to deter anyone, that is anyone in their right mind! I also play ball or frisbee, train OB or whatever in the front yard often so that passersby can see the GSDs or Dutchie.

I hate to say it but that is why smith and wesson accompanies me to the door along with Gwen. Not that I wave it around or anything but, it is there.. ready to go.

While that it true, unfortunately, most property crimes are crimes of opportunity. Having a dog warn the home owner is something that most criminals want to avoid. (because of Mr Smith and Mr Wesson, among other things) If someone really has a reason to be after you(r property) then indeed, dogs are not bullet proof, or pit bull proof. But it will help against visitors who just want a drink of water, use your phone, trim your tree or fix your roof (ahem)

I agree, also, if I have a dog, and my neigbours don't... where will they go...? Right
