Again my poor Sugar!

Yesterday Sugar woke up with a swollen face. She was in bed and my husband heard noises from her like she was going to throw up so he took her from bed and put her in the bathroom. She threw up. Then he looked at her and her face was all swollen up!

I took her outside in case she had to throw up again and took a couple of pics and called the vet.

Here is how she looked




We took her to the vet hospital, and the swelling started to go down as we were on the way. She said it was some allergic reaction and gave some Vanectyl P.

She is better now, whew! Poor girl!

Poor Sugar! She can't get a break. I hope the swelling is better now.

OMG - she looks miserable. Poor thing.

I hate seeing that reaction, and knock on wood (my head??), I have never had it come up in my dogs. So glad she is feeling better, but sorry she had to deal with it and you had to deal with the scare.

Even her eyes look swollen, poor girl.
Could this be an extension of the itchy thing she was going through?
I'm so OCD, I'd be washing everything in vinegar or hydrogen peroxide, and then treating the whole house for bugs in case it was a bite from something.

Oh that poor girl! She sure has been through it. Did the vet have any idea what type of allergy? I am thinking that it may be an extension of the itching allergy too.

Laundry detergent? Food? it is so hard to figure these things out!

Poor baby...and poor mom and dad, too, for having to see their Sug like that and dealing with it. Time for a report...Status????

Hi, thanks everyone for the concern. Ya, pretty scary!

No more swelling thank goodness. The day after it happened tho (yesterday) she wanted to eat grass all day. She kept going to the door and asking to go out and then would just eat grass. She threw up her breakfast sprinkled with grass and again later in the day on her walk. As we were walking, she would try to reach over to the grass on the side of the trail and grab a mouthful. From the medication perhaps?? Just got up this morning so we will see how it goes.

As far as the swelling, the vet said she would probably never know what it was, but seeing as she was sleeping, my guess would be a spider came along and sat down beside her...I did talk to the vet about the itchyness and asked if she thought it was connected. She said probably only to the extent that Sugar would be prone to allergy reactions. She said she could be itchy from an allergic reaction to a flea bite, or something in the house. She looked her over and found no fleas or anything.

For $740 we can have Intradermal Skin Testing done to see what environmental allergies she could be allergic to, then treatment would be something like Benadryl or Douxo shampooing. We will skip the big bill and just try a treatment to keep her comfortable. I asked about extra virgin coconut oil and she said the Omega 3 supplement is more of a proven thing and that is something else we could try to see if it helps. I will supplement her diet with an oil as a natural remedy would be my first choice.

Thank goodness she's better. Allergies do tend to get worse and multiply--poor sugar.

Is she eating regular dog food? If so I would seriously consider changing to a raw/home diet. It isn't something your Vet is likely to recommend as they get their nutritional training mostly from the information supplied by dog food manufacturers. You can spend a fortune at the Vet and still not get answers--I'd start with the food (One of the most common causes of allergies and cancer in dogs in my opinion).

If you need help with diets, lots of folks here have mentioned that they feed raw and I'm sure would be glad to help with ideas/links or whatever.

Yes, I have considered trying the raw diet...trying to get over the, well, rawness of it all!

Keep in mind regarding the raw thing....you can always go with a prepared raw, like Bravo or Oma's (or whatever brand they have in your neck of the woods), and just open the container and plop it in a bowl...no worrying about percentages of muscle/organ/bone, etc. Just an idea... (And, if you do consider going this route, find a local co-op you can join, so you get the best prices, buy the food in 10 lb chubs, then partially thaw and repackage in 1 or 2 lb containers and refreeze.)

It sounds like her body is trying to rid itself of the toxin, whatever it was. You might want to fast her for a day or two. Just some chicken broth or warm water with raw honey. The body will then have time to take care of the toxin and not food digestion.

If you don't want to go raw and make your kitchen look like a crime scene, you might want consider cooking a stew with chicken, rice, vegetable. At least you have total control of the ingredience and can eliminate possible allergens.

Its a good thing I dont have close neighbors that can look in my window, they would see me with a big cleaver and two dogs drooling at the body parts and blood everywhere.
