Question for the breeders...

My parents are Basset Hound people, but I figure the general idea of breeding is the same. There is a person that they found that has BH puppies , these people arent "breeders" they have a great looking male and female that they bred. They are AKC registerd dogs and are very beautiful. They have always gotten their dogs from true show breeders and are a bit worried. The woman is local and is not pushy. They have a website and pictures. Usually the show breeder that they would get the previouse dogs from would have a runt or as in Sooties case, the BH that just passed, started to show but had crooked teeth, but were all proven quality.

I told them they could have Sadie but they said no, I dont know why

Anyway. I know many of us here, including me, got their dogs from different avenues. Im not too worried but I told my mom I have wonderful knowledgeable friends on here and would ask.

My biggest thing would be to look into the various health issues that are prevalent in that breed and verify that the parents (and hopefully, generations back and parent's siblings) are all clear of those issues. If they care about the breed at all, beyond owning lovely dogs, they would have had those things checked out to make sure they aren't knowingly perpetuating a problem.

AKC papers mean nothing more than the parents were AKC registered. It shows that the pedigrees are tracked, not that the dogs met the breed standard in any way.

I told mom to ask that question. Its good to hear from you guys so I know im on the right track. BH are usually prone to ear and eye infections and bad backs.

Tell us about yourself: I am in New York State. Got my first DS about 14 years ago (more or less as a rescue- lost her in Nov.). After years of GSD's, and a few dogs of other breeds (Rotti/Beauceron/Ger. Shorthaired Pointer/ Yorkie and my current Jack Russell) I now have another DS, 4mo female, no name yet, tho I have a few in mind.
Also have a horse-old quarter horse mare-32.
Can't wait for all the snow to get gone! Spring is coming too slow this year!
