He suffered through a nasty bacterial skin infection that we think he got from the dog park lake. I don't like to take him there, but I felt he needed a swim one hot summer weekend day. I won't do that again.
He's really starting to mature. Crazy hour has become manageable, and he is so smart and listens to me great - most of the time. Still having the leash reactivity issues, but we're about to embark on a new round of behavioral training.

Tell us about yourself: I adopted a Dutch Shepherd mix (without knowing what she was) from the SPCA here in Victoria BC and am now trying to learn everything I can about this breed. My husband and I work from home most of the time so I thought it was time to get a puppy! We have his 2 boys here half the time and we wanted a nice family dog.
Sugar looks like a miniature Dutch Shepherd with floppy ears, and has every ounce of DS traits in her little body!
I hope to learn from other DS owners and share doggy experiences.
Tell us about yourself: Hi there. I WILL be a new Dutch Shepherd owner on July 20th!!! Puppies are on the ground and a huge litter at 14! Very excited. I chose the Dutch because I like high drive dogs and my husband likes shepherds. We both have had GSDs in our past. I also am interested in search and rescue training. I live in the mountains of California and have two older Australian Shepherds. I do know that I have a job managing this pack. My husband is on board with it all. No kids. Both of us have flexible jobs. We are active folk but aging! ;-)) Still we mountain bike, hike, cross-country ski and my husband runs. I walk in the woods with the dogs 3 times a day and we are lucky to have US Forest right out the door. So that is it.

I just got a 9 week old DS and he has a tail that wraps over the back like Radar... now I know what he will look like!
BUT reading your post I was sorely disappointed to hear that the crazy hour lasts 2 years or more... I was nervously saying to myself that this will pass in 6 months. OH NO!

Wow - look at the focus that little guy has. I can just imagine the little puppy teeth marks in the umbrella handle.
I think I've read some other posts where these dogs have their crazy hours all the way to 4. What's really great is that almost everyone on this forum knows what crazy hour is.

Crazy hour? I don't know what that is. We have all day crazy or sleeping, especially with the new girl. I have to put her in a crate if I want to sleep and she'd not tired. Who knew that a dog could climb to the top of a 7' china hutch to find her frisbee? Elli has the high curled tail and Odin has the down tail like a GSD has.
Radar looks so much like Odin in body shape. Odin's 72lbs right now. He just turned 3 and I don't think he has much growing left to do.
Just curious, what type of training are you starting with the leash reactivity? I'm always looking for new approaches/ideas. Odin's come a long way with his, but Elli does this weird moan/mumble around certain people and uncontrolled dogs.

Yes, "hour" may not be the correct length of time, but Radar is very mellow during the day. He seems to want all the attention when I am trying to relax.
My trainer has been working with a specialist on BAT (http://functionalrewards.com/) training, and we are hoping to apply some of the new techniques to helping Radar cope with the reactivity. She is also starting what she calls a "Growly Dog" group class as soon as she can find a good location and time. I really don't know how that works, but I will certainly check in with the progress and details afterwards.
