- Tell us about yourself: Hi, I am retired, served in the USNavy, am married and we have an 8 month old DS and an 8 year old Chihuahua..They get along great. I read a lot of useful information in some posts about training. I always wanted a German shepherd and I wanted to name him Dutch then I met a DS that was a retired bomb dog and I fell in love with the breed. Thought the name was "original".
Chewing our stuff
Has anyone had a problem with their DS chewing corners of furniture? We initially thought it was anxiety separation, because it only happened when my husband and I were both gone out. But today he went in the truck like he usually does with my husband and he got out of the truck to speak to a guy, Dutch was in the front seat and could see my husband the entire time and in that 10 minutes, he chewed the shifter knob and the grip on the dash. Yesterday he chewed another hole in his bed. I was wondering what we can do to stop this. He has bones, ropes. Balls, etc. But he didn't have anything with him in the truck. Last time we left him he chewed the corner of my end table. Any advise would be greatly appreciated. He just turned w0 months old on 11/6/2016.

- Tell us about yourself: Over the past 25 years I shared my life with a Rott, two Akitas, and a Shepherd/Husky mix. I now have my first Dutch Shepherd. Lexi was born in early September 2014. She is great in so many different ways but I could use advice from some been there done that DS owners.
Re: Chewing our stuff
Lexi was always under supervision, in a crate, or in a kennel until she turned two. Since we kept such a close eye on her, we would correct her immediately when we went to chew something she wasn't supposed to chew. Redirect and give her something she was allowed to chew.

You have to be tough if you want to allow your dog full reign of the house because they don't know any better. I have three of these breed and they all understand. I can leave all three out and nothing will happen to my house.
