Protect paws in hot sand

When we walk onto the beach in the morning, the sand is okay. I put up an umbrella close to the water. Marco is fetching his toys out of the water and Jerry is chilling under the umbrella in the shade. But when we are leaving a couple of hours (or more) later, the sand is so heated up, it is torture just to walk the short distance from the water to the side walk. Last weekend my senior Labi didn't make it. Thanks goodness a very nice young man scooped him up (75 lbs.) and carried him to the car. Marco and I made a "mad dash" but he was uncomfortable too.

I was looking all week for something to protect their paws from the hot sand. Looked online and in local pet stores at doggie boots. What a rip off! $30 or more!! And it didn't look like it would work in the sand (velcro straps etc.). We only need something for the short distance from the water to the car. No long walks or such. So I went to Walmart and bought baby tennis socks :binkybaby: (6-18 months), Faded Glory, doubled them on each paw. Fits nicely, didn't even need the hair crunchies I bought to keep the socks up. And I can throw them after in the washer! $10 for both dogs! :wtg:

I did a "trial run" at home with both dogs and they didn't mind it at all. Here is Marco.......

Tell us about yourself: I have had a DS for almost a year. Gwen and I are considering participating in PSA and or possible Ring Sport. I also have a Great Dane. I have grown up around working GSDs and my last GSD was a working K9 officer. I am all about dogs and animals in general and want to learn as much as I can about training.

Tell us about yourself: I adopted a Dutch Shepherd mix (without knowing what she was) from the SPCA here in Victoria BC and am now trying to learn everything I can about this breed. My husband and I work from home most of the time so I thought it was time to get a puppy! We have his 2 boys here half the time and we wanted a nice family dog.

Sugar looks like a miniature Dutch Shepherd with floppy ears, and has every ounce of DS traits in her little body!

I hope to learn from other DS owners and share doggy experiences.

OMG, the poor thing! The socks might work better because they still can feel the ground and can keep the balance better.

Just came back from the beach and IT DID WORK !!!! :mrgreen:

When I put the socks on, the people on the beach were like "what the hell is this crazy woman doing to her dogs" but when they saw how comfortable my dogs walked across the hot sand, they gave us "thumbs up". :wtg:

Already rinsed them and I have 16 little socks hanging to dry on my patio. :whistle: :g_wink:

lol, I can just picture you putting the socks on and the people looking at you, lol...good for you! Glad it worked, 'cause who wants hot feet!

You know what would be funny...why don't you post a you tube how-to video on how to NOT burn your dogs feet in the heat! :lol:

I just need a camera man/woman to shoot the footage. I already carry an umbrella, a big bag with toys, water, water bowl, etc., not to mention two big dogs on the leash. All my 4 hands are already in use. :loco: :lol:

Doggy backpacks !!!!
They can carry the supplies thus freeing you up for camera work :wtg:

Tell us about yourself: I am in New York State. Got my first DS about 14 years ago (more or less as a rescue- lost her in Nov.). After years of GSD's, and a few dogs of other breeds (Rotti/Beauceron/Ger. Shorthaired Pointer/ Yorkie and my current Jack Russell) I now have another DS, 4mo female, no name yet, tho I have a few in mind.
Also have a horse-old quarter horse mare-32.
Can't wait for all the snow to get gone! Spring is coming too slow this year!

Thanks. Great price. It certainly would have helped to keep the cut paw dry. I hate to say it because I know a lot of you need it desperately, but we had a lot of rain lately.
I used a tennis sock, wrapped a sturdy plastic bag around it and duck-taped it. Not the most stylish way but it did the job too. :lol:
Because of the rain, the sand on the beach stays moist and does not get that hot even until noon, so we didn't need to do the "sock procedure" last weekend. Sorry, no pics for the contest
