Tell us about yourself: I adopted a Dutch Shepherd mix (without knowing what she was) from the SPCA here in Victoria BC and am now trying to learn everything I can about this breed. My husband and I work from home most of the time so I thought it was time to get a puppy! We have his 2 boys here half the time and we wanted a nice family dog.

Sugar looks like a miniature Dutch Shepherd with floppy ears, and has every ounce of DS traits in her little body!

I hope to learn from other DS owners and share doggy experiences.

Stinky dog feet

Post by Sugars Mom »

My dog has stinky feet. I have washed them and it helped but its an ongoing thing. Its not like she just stepped in something.

I googled it, and read about dogs feet smelling like Frito corn chips, and the reason being is the dog food is made from corn. Her feet are more like a sweaty smell. Her food does not have corn in it, so maybe it is something from her food?? I can smell her when she is laying next to me on the couch (like she is right now). Its not horrible, but noticable.

Does anyone else notice this with their dog(s)?

Does anyone know something to do to make it go away, besides washing them everyday?

Tell us about yourself: I am in New York State. Got my first DS about 14 years ago (more or less as a rescue- lost her in Nov.). After years of GSD's, and a few dogs of other breeds (Rotti/Beauceron/Ger. Shorthaired Pointer/ Yorkie and my current Jack Russell) I now have another DS, 4mo female, no name yet, tho I have a few in mind.
Also have a horse-old quarter horse mare-32.
Can't wait for all the snow to get gone! Spring is coming too slow this year!

First thought--check the beds of her toenails to be sure there is no infection starting there.

Dogs sweat through their feet, so it only makes sense that they may smell that way.

Another thought is that if she has any allergies, many dogs chew at their feet because they itch. This can cause irritation and infection.

Hmmm, she does have allergies and I've switched her food so now she doesn't chew on her feet anymore, but I'll look again at her feet to see if I can spot anything that looks like an infection.

Actually, now that I think about it, it may be the food 'cause I've done some switching with her food and am back to Natural Balance Sweet Potato and Fish. I had switched her to Acana a few months ago and she started chewing and scratching again, so back to NB last month. But when she was on NB before, I think her feet had a smell but I didn't notice it when she was on Acana.
