Tell us about yourself: I am in New York State. Got my first DS about 14 years ago (more or less as a rescue- lost her in Nov.). After years of GSD's, and a few dogs of other breeds (Rotti/Beauceron/Ger. Shorthaired Pointer/ Yorkie and my current Jack Russell) I now have another DS, 4mo female, no name yet, tho I have a few in mind.
Also have a horse-old quarter horse mare-32.

Save K9 Tommy

Just saw this on FB. Beautiful DS. My cousin's son is a Police officer in Tiffin---I'll try to get more info. Just one of the times I wish I were rich so I could pay all the bills for them.

Tell us about yourself: I live in Metro-West Boston with my husband and our rescued Dutch Shepherd, Minnie. She loves anything involving activity. Our first rescued DS, Kaya, loved to tug. Our second rescued DS (who actually turned out to be a GSDx), Marley, loved to nap. I volunteer for the North American Dutch Shepherd Rescue and am a member of the NADSR BOD.

I also saw this yesterday. I've cross-posted on my FB profile and on the NADSR FB page.

Basically, K9 Tommy has Stage IV Lymphoma, has been retired, the Town is contributing ~$1500 toward his medical expenses, and treatment is expected to cost ~$5500. The handler is willing to pay out of pocket for this and is trying to do some fundraising to help cover the cost. K9 Tommy and his handler are THE K9 unit in Tiffin, OH. They are accepting donations on-line and off-line.
Cheryl in MA, with rescued DS
Kaya, adopted January 2006 (over the bridge, September 2014)
Marley, adopted February 2008
Minnie, adopted March 2015

I don't mean to sound cold, but........
Stage 4? Retired? I think it is admirable that the city pays for part of it. Wow. And wonderful that the handler is willing to do what he can, I truly do. There should be more handlers like him, that man rocks.
I lost a K9 to cancer, in the middle of her career. I think we never really got over that blow. The county paid nothing, not even their repect. While I truly truly wish for the handler that the outcome is a happy one, I think I will allot my rescue resources to a cause that has a better chance of success. But if positive thoughts can help heal a dog, this one will be fine at the end of all this.

I lost my first dog to lymphoma. It cost a lot of money and extended his life about a half a year. :( It was very hard to watch.

Update from FB

Save K9 Tommy
We have an incredible update for everyone: Thanks to the generous donations from across the world, Erin and I are proud to report we have successfully raised over $5,000 towards Tommy's treatments!!! We are so thankful of every donation, large and small, and thanks to all of the great people of the world, Tommy will get the treatment he deserves. We are no longer asking for donations, however we ...will still accept them if people want to donate. Anything we receive after this will be used to help other animals in need, K9 Units, and groups that help animals. We can't thank you enough. This experience has been so overwhelming, and the human connection we experienced, the sharing of stories and well-wishes from across the globe, has changed Erin and I forever. We thank you, sincerely, from the bottom of our hearts. We, as always, will continue to provide updates and correspond to everyone! We look at each one of you, as our new friends and we are grateful you have entered our lives! With much love and thanks, Jake DeMonte

K9 Tommy (DS) from the Tiffin, Ohio Police Dept. has died. What a sad outcome for a very brave DS. Rest well Tommy.

There is a tribute to him that NADSR also posted:
